The University of Queensland South Pacific Islander Association (UQSPIA)

The University of Queensland’s South Pacific Islander Association was established in November 2014. UQ SPIA is a university society embodying culture, community, and challenge. It endeavours to empower and equip Maori and Pacific Islanders on and off campus to embrace their culture, build strong community bonds, and to challenge the existing barriers and stereotypes facing Pacific Islanders.

Talofa lava | Malo e lelei | Bula vinaka | Noa’ia | Fakaalofa lahi atu | Fakatalofa atu | Malo ni | Mauri | Ekamowir Omo | Halo wantok | Halo olgeta | Ran annim | Aloha | Kia Ora and warm Pacific Greetings to you all.

The very first of its kind, UQSPIA welcomes you to celebrate, recognise and enjoy the wonders that Pacific Island culture holds!

Our mission is to strengthen the presence of and empower Pacific Islanders on and off-campus at the University of Queensland and to create a network of old, new, existing and potential students in the University of Pacific Islander and Non-Pacific Islander background; to recognise and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of the Pacific; to be involved in the wider community.

From Pasifika Varsity Games (PVG), a UQSPIA sporting initiative, where we compete with other Pasifika Associations from QUT, Griffith and USQ. To our academic initiative INSPIA, a student-led summit at UQ, led by Pasifika youth for Pasifika youth in Queensland, advocating the importance of higher-level education. To our Pasifika Cultural Night, where we showcase the diversity of Pasifika at Schonell Theatre.

We at UQSPIA have many events that not only empower ourselves as minorities here at UQ but also create a community, a second family, for all our members domestic and international, of Pacific Islander and non-Pacific Islander heritage.

Find us on Facebook, Instagram and our website. We hope to see you all soon!
