UQ Papua New Guinea Students Association (UQPNGSA)

There are two common catch phrases that are synonymous with Papua New Guinea. The first one being “the land of the unexpected”. Our pristine environment including the cultures and traditions that has been there for thousands of years is still untouched and has not much influence from the outside world. Even more interesting and fascinating is that we have the most diverse culture and tradition globally where the 850 plus languages we speak stands as a testament to that. If anyone wants to learn about cultures that are remnant and hasn’t had much influence from outside world, come take a journey with us. Speaking of journey, there is this other catch phrase “a land of a million different journeys”. Be it the highest peaks of Mt. Wilhelm, Victoria or Giluwe, towering at 4000 plus meters above sea level, to the beautiful coastline of New Guinea Islands or the mighty rivers of Sepik and Fly, PNG is truly a place of a million different journeys. As such we are more than happy to share our rich culture and the million journeys with you all right here at the St. Lucia, the heart of UQ.

The University of Queensland Papua New Guinea Students Association (UQPNGSA) is officially back! UQPNGSA is an international student group for Papua New Guinea students studying here at The University of Queensland. The club was re-affiliated with UQ Union towards the back end of 2023 with 3 major aims. Firstly, to provide academic and moral support to all students as well as providing a platform where students can hone their leadership skills by taking responsibilities and leadership roles in the association. Secondly, to promote a strong relationship with The University of Queensland and its community and thirdly, but not the least, to help facilitate students with their establishment and departure process.

These 3 major aims can be achieved when a thriving community is formed amongst the students with a sense of belongingness. In this community it is envisaged that student’s concerns are addressed amicably as well as providing appropriate guidance, advice and a support system for the students’ academic journey. In doing so create a community that supports each other as well as encouraging students to actively participate and take up leadership roles in the association. Also, by participating in the university activities, we would like to share our rich and diverse culture with the rest of the world as well promote UQ in PNG, the pacific and globally. Furthermore, UQPNGSA thrives to support new students’ establishment in Brisbane City by giving tips and providing advice on rentals amongst others. Students completing their students and leaving back to PNG will also be supported especially with their repatriation.

While UQPNGSA may be for PNG students studying at the University of Queensland, we are open and would gladly welcome students from different ethnicity. We are also open to welcoming PNG students from other nearby Southeast Queensland universities such as QUT, Griffith, University of Sunshine Coast, University of Southern Queensland and Bond University. If you are a Papua New Guinea student that has been away from home for some time and feel that you would like to connect back to your roots, this group is for you! If you are a Papua New Guinea student who would like to contribute something back to your country in whatever little way you can, this group is for you! If you are an international student or student from different ethnicity who would like to learn more about Papua New Guinea and its rich culture, this group for you! Come on now and get registered and take the million different journeys with us in the land of the unexpected!
