UQ Stargazing and Astronomy (UQSA)

The UQ Stargazing and Astronomy (UQSA) society creates a community of students who love space and aims to connect these students with the broader world of astronomy. UQSA creates a space where anyone can learn more about stargazing and astronomy, with as little barrier-to-entry as possible and fosters community through casual stargazing nights and fireside chats with astronomers and astrophysicists. UQSA hosts a wide variety of events, from space-themed movie-nights to technical build-nights, with the aim of creating a place where anybody who loves space can feel at home.

Founded in 2021, UQ Stargazing and Astronomy (UQSA) aims to bring together a community of students who love all things space. We aspire to have zero-barrier to entry, teaching our members everything they need for our stargazing nights and giving practical experience regardless of experience-level. UQSA has developed partnerships with key wholesalers in the astronomy space in Brisbane, such as AstroAnarchy, and is strongly connected with the academic Astronomy community in UQ and more broadly in Queensland.

A. No problem! We partner with various telescope providers in Brisbane and beyond to provide our members with all the equipment they need on stargazing nights

A. Absolutely! Our helpful members will be delighted to teach you everything you need to know to have an amazing time at UQSA events, we also hold an event at the start of the year to teach members about telescopes.

A. No! There are plenty of great dark-sky locations right here in Brisbane, and you can see some incredible stuff even if there’s some light pollution.

Definitely! We welcome those form our wider community. When signing up through QPAY, skip the section asking for Student ID. Please be aware that some events may be limited to UQ students due to venue restrictions, security concerns and/or due to health and safety reasons.

We welcome all levels of knowledge! From amateurs to enthusiasts to the Neil deGrasse Tyson’s and Carl Sagan’s – everyone is welcome at UQSA!

Though similar-sounding, the two are quite distinct. Astronomy is a branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space and the physical universe as a whole. Astrology is a pseudoscience that studies the movements and positions of celestial objects and relates it to human affairs. Warning: confusing the two may disgruntle your fellow UQSA members!
