UQU President Jeremy Lwin said that the signing of the agreement was a great outcome for the Union.
“The agreement will significantly expand the service offerings of UQU. It will mean more for Clubs & Societies, more for advocacy services, more for collectives and interest groups, and more for international students,” Mr Lwin said.
“The six year term of the agreement provides stability for UQU and guarantees future students access to services currently provided and more,” he said.
As part of the agreement a new and improved Red Room will find a home in the leisure and services complex being created in the former Staff House (building 41) along with other student facilities to be operated by UQU.
The facilities will overlook the Natural Amphitheatre, which will be upgraded to include an outdoor stage with permanent audio and lighting equipment.
“UQU is working closely with the University on the design of the new leisure and services complex, we want to make sure it’s what students need and want” Ms Lwin said.
The new complex is expected to open towards the end of 2019.
A new food court will also be developed to replace the existing Physiol refectory and will include new outlets, more seating and a preparation kitchen with microwaves. The new centre is due to open for Semester 1, 2019.
