President’s Report – Edition 3, 2019

March has been about consolidating the work that began in O-week, as well as beginning new projects to focus on for the rest of 2019.

At our March Council meeting, UQU’s 2019 operating budget was passed with bipartisan support. Grants for our 200+ societies have begun to be distributed, too. If you missed signing up to a club at Market Day, be sure to find them on Facebook so you can attend their events this year! UQU knows our clubs and societies are the best engagement strategy for UQ students – we believe in a club for everyone and everyone in a club. If you haven’t found the right club just yet, come along to some of UQU’s events! We just hosted Food on Forgan and our Cultural Fiesta is coming up soon. Be sure to like us on Facebook to stay in the loop.

In the wake of this month’s terror attack in Christchurch, UQ Union has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all students – regardless of their race, culture or religion – feel welcome on campus. This week, students from UQ’s Muslim and Muslimah Society and I attended the Premier’s Harmony Day event at Parliament house. It was wonderful to see so many different cultures celebrate the event together.

Our Semper team also released what could be their best issue yet. Two of our journalists, Rowan and Nilsson, spent months investigating wage theft on campus, and wrote a compelling article about a retailer at UQ ripping off student employees. The article is a stark reminder that students, especially internationals, are vulnerable to exploitation at work. In response to the wage theft expose, our International Officer and Student Rights Vice-President ran a workshop on part-time employment for students. Our SHOC team taught students how to write a resume and Professor Graeme Orr, from the Law School, was kind enough to run a session on workplace rights (hint – join your union!). The event was a huge success with over 100 registrations, but don’t stress if you missed out! We plan to run it again in Semester 2.

Even though O-Week is over, the fun never stops at UQU! Make sure you follow us on Instagram and Facebook so you don’t miss out. You can also subscribe to our newsletter here.

Last week, I finished my 12-month term as President of the University of Queensland Union.

Hey! I’m Georgia, and it’s my last week as your UQ Student Union President. Before I hang up my UQU polo for the final time, I want to take some time to reflect on the year we had.
