UQU Student Executive

Meet your 2024 Student Executive!

Dylan Thomas

Get to know me!

What are your pronouns?

He/Him

What is your elected position for 2024?

Chief Editor of Semper Floreat

If you’ve been on the exec team before, which position/s have you served and when?

I was also Chief Editor of Semper Floreat in 2023

What are you currently studying?

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Economics, with the long-term goal of studying teaching.

What are you most looking forward to about your involvement in the Union in 2024?

I’m really looking forward to bringing student media back to life on campus, making sure we have a student media outlet that students are excited to hear from and contribute to.

What are your priorities, key focuses and/or commitments in 2024?

My main priority is going to be ensuring we publish at least 8 print editions of Semper Floreat over the course of the year, as well as boosting our online presence with articles on our website and video content on currently undervalued platforms.

What do you believe are the biggest or most pressing challenges facing students today?

I think one of the biggest issues facing students at current is the cost of living crisis. Students are continuously being charged exorbitant HECS fees which will be indexed and hanging over their heads for years, if not decades. While at the same time, they’re being hit with a housing crisis which leaves their pockets empty after barely scraping enough up for their rent, and this is the reality for most students in 2024.

How would you like to support, represent, and/or entertain students?

Through my role as Chief Editor of the student-run media outlet on campus, I hope to provide students not only a voice to them regarding the happenings of the university world, but also a voice for them to express everything from their personal, cultural and political frustrations – to their creative and intellectual creations.

What’s been a highlight or favourite moment or event from your time at university or with UQU?

My favourite event that I’ve attended on campus has to be Clubbies through the Clubs and Societies department of the UQU. It’s an awards ceremony which gives us the chance to recognise the great contributions which club executives make to keeping the fun and light-hearted aspects of campus life alive.

What can you be found doing for fun when you’re not studying or working?

I’m mostly a pretty basic bloke in my spare time, I go to the gym and I play video games. However, one thing I do out of the ordinary is I compete in speed-cubing competitions, which is where you compete to solve Rubik’s cubes and other puzzles like them in as short a time as possible.

Where’s your favourite spot to grab a feed and kick back on campus?

Definitely Pizza Caffe. I usually eat at the office, but I’ll sometimes pick a quiet corner on campus.

How can students get in contact with you?

Students can reach out to us by either messaging the Semper Floreat Facebook page, emailing us at [email protected], or emailing me directly at [email protected].

Anything else?

All I can think to say is this: Enjoy your time at UQ, and be sure to get involved with the UQ Union through volunteering, or joining clubs and societies on campus, or the many other ways that I’m sure our other executives have told you about!
