Sophy Barlow

She/her

What is your elected position for 2024?

Disabilities Officer

What are you currently studying?

I’m in my third year of a Bachelor’s of Psychological Science (Honours).

What are you most looking forward to about your involvement in the Union in 2024?

Engaging with the student body and being able to see what we can do to help.

What are your priorities, key focuses and/or commitments in 2024?

Promoting and advocating for the needs of disabled students. Not just focusing on helping them academically but also assisting with fostering an inclusive social sphere made of students with disabilities where they can truly exist as themselves.

What do you believe are the biggest or most pressing challenges facing students today?

Cost of living, trying to balance work and university study has become much harder to do as working to earn a liveable amount requires so much more commitment. This issue is can be made even harder when combined with disability.

How would you like to support, represent, and/or entertain students?

I would like to support students by keeping them informed so they will be able to make the best decisions for themselves. This will be done through running informative panels and providing that social space where lived experiences can be shared.

What’s been a highlight or favourite moment or event from your time at university or with UQU?

A highlight from my time at university would have to be helping to organise and attending the Disability Collective x Queer Collective Social in 2023.

What can you be found doing for fun when you’re not studying or working?

Binge-watching whatever the newest trend is or blasting music through my headphones while reading.

Where’s your favourite spot to grab a feed and kick back on campus?

Wordsmiths’ café, they know me.

How can students get in contact with you?

Students can get in contact with the Disability Collective through our social media: Facebook (UQU Disability Collective), Instagram (@uqudisability) or Discord (https://discord.gg/tXMd22W7YW).  Through our email ([email protected]). Or through chatting with us at our periodic stalls held typically at Campbell place.

Anything else?

I will be in the office most days so feel free to drop by for a chat or a chess match.
